Presale Bourgogne 2018 - #Bourgogne18
The market situation
Following three successful Bourgogne Wine Presale campaigns, with the 2018 harvest we are now in our fourth year, this time with 28 exclusive Bourgogne wineries and five from the Rhône. More information
After a succession of difficult years, the sensation was that 2018 would be magnificent. And so it has proved to be. The unfavourable weather of recent harvests, particularly that of 2016, had reduced production, but the benign weather of 2018 allowed yields to bounce back. For red wines this was 16% above the average of the last five years and 28% for white wines.
A fantastic year characterized as the warmest and driest since 2003, with rainfall at only 55% of the average of the last 30 years.
The wines of the 2018 harvest are seductive and concentrated, with complex and balanced whites, and intense and structured reds. Prices have stabilized quite a bit.
They have stayed the same for generic and village wines, with a slight rise - between 5 and 7% - in the 1st and Grands Crus.
The Hospices de Beaune auction serves as an initial barometer interest in the vintage and market trends. The 158th year of the aution was held on 18th November, 2018. The total production of 828 barrels, were sold in their entirety, and raised a total of € 13,968,750. Prices increased by 19% compared to the 2017 harvest. Specifically, the prices of red wines on average rose by 16.5% and whites by 20.5%. The demand for Bourgogne wines continues to rise globally in an relentless manner, and labels of the most famous and shought after Crus are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain on the market. In the latest auctions in Hong Kong this January, Bourgogne wines rose in price by around 5%.
The latest 2019 harvest has been scarcer and quality. Noting the trend of the latest Hospices de Beaune auction, with its remarkable inflation in prices, we recommend buying the 2018 vintage.
